Winter Wellness – Naturally

Well here we are, about to round the corner into a new year! You know what I am seeing the most in my news feed right now?

Everyone is talking about their colds. Or how gross they feel and that they haven’t gotten out of their PJs in days. Now I am all for PJ days, but I think we can all agree that they are more fun when you are feeling well!

Diffusing Essential Oils:

Let’s talk about a great way to clear germs from the air in your home! I love diffusing essential oils. EOs are a major helper when it comes to mood (and they smell SO good!), the right ones can actually kill airborne pathogens which will help to keep the whole home healthier!

Powerhouse oils like Cinnamon, Clove Bud, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Frankincense, Siberian Fir, and ALL the citrus oils are my faves at this time of year!

I love coming up with diffuser blends based on what me or my family needs that day. I decide based on what time of day it is, or if we have been around sick people and so on.

Hydration:

H2O!!! This is a very easy way to up your health, energy, vitality, and your all around body function! Hydrate! When you think you have had enough, have some more!

The MINIMUM you need is your weight in lbs, divided by two, in oz of water! If you are 200lbs, that means you need a minimum of 100oz of water for your body to function properly! Add some citrus, make herbal tea, but do not skimp, your body needs it to do its job to keep you healthy or restore health!

One of my favourite tips is getting a huge water bottle that you love, to help keep you on track, this is my favourite 40oz bottle that I refill 4-5x per day!

Supplementation:

Let’s talk about supplements a little bit, I was really never a supplement person, I didn’t think I needed them… BUT I have never ever felt better since I started taking Doterra’s Life Long Vitality pack, it lays an excellent foundation for overall health. You can read all about the benefits and ingredients in this little e-book:  https://media.doterra.com/us/en/ebooks/lifelong-vitality.pdf

Also, very important, especially if you live in Canada – you NEED extra vitamin D3. You cannot get it from the sun between October and April – I recommend a liquid drop version as it tends to be the most easily absorbed!

If you feel like you are coming down with something, aside from drinking lots of water and other hydrating liquids, I personally add some extra essential oils to my day. I love adding a high quality (ie: whole food, not synthetic) Vitamin C & Zinc combo as well! Elderberry syrup is something else to add when you are needing some extra immune support.

Reduce your sugar intake:

Reducing sugar intake is another really important piece in the puzzle for better wellness this winter! Not only does it cause inflammation in the body, it also dramatically reduces your immune function, especially if you load up on it!

I have observed that the times my older son has gotten really sick have immediately followed events or occasions where he was allowed way more sugar than usual. Sometimes it is unavoidable to some degree, but we have started doing some things (that I already did with myself) that have helped.

Make sure a plate of fruit or veggies, protein like meat and cheese goes first… then a treat, then layering in mandatory veggies or something between a candy or another treat. This way he fills up on more nutritious food and won’t be a bottomless pit for the sugary stuff that is also less filling. We also do a glass of water before any juice or anything is allowed and this is a great trick/reminder for adults too with sugary non alcoholic or alcoholic bevies!

Uplifting your mood:

It can be really hard to stay motivated during the cold, darker months. Many people struggle with depression and SAD.

The hydration, and supplements I have already mentioned can be really helpful. I know that getting a little personal UV light is really helpful for many people too!

I also always recommend essential oils as they are incredible at positively effecting mood!

My top recommendations are Citrus oils (especially Bergamot), Lavender, Frankincense, Copaiba, Roman Chamomile, Petitgrain, Neroli, Rose, Jasmine (and so many more!) both aromatically and internally where applicable.

If you do everything you are able to manage with the natural tools you have available and it just isn’t doing the trick, there is zero shame in checking out medication options with your health professional. I know many people who work really successfully with a Naturopathic Doctor to find an option that works for them!

I hope this has been valuable to you! Please feel free to share it with family & friends who may also find it helpful! I am always here to help if you have any questions. Sending you healthy vibes for a great winter!
