Mama Gems Teething Necklace Review

I’m going to be really honest – I didn’t really get the whole teething necklace thing at first,  maybe because I don’t really do jewellery in general or maybe because there are a million things your baby will chew on but it usually isn’t what you want them to chew on, and maybe because I just hadn’t gravitated to any that I had seen. The teething necklace I got from Mama Gems totally changed my mind.

When I saw my friend with a super cute, but subtle teething necklace I thought it might be a good distraction/toy/teether to try because my hair cringes when H leans in for a hug/to grab the little tiny curls at the back of my neck. He has also taken to jamming his hand down my shirt at random and was getting into the habit of pinching and grabbing while nursing – no thanks! I hoped a necklace would be a good little something to keep his hands busy! I told her I had been thinking about looking for one but didn’t know where to start because there seems to be a lot of options out there, and let’s just say I am not terribly decisive. She told me it was from a company called Mama Gems, Mom owned and operated and local – in Vancouver which to me is a huge bonus!

It took me a few weeks to pull the trigger because I just couldn’t pick, but I finally settled on the Auni silicone necklace. I was pleasantly surprised when it came within a few days of ordering and loved everything about it once it arrived! I loooove the black cord, simple design and colour combination of this necklace, as well as the drop length. H immediately took to chewing on it and loves the feel of the beads, it can be a great distraction. He also thinks it is great fun to shove it in my mouth to make me chew on it, so I can say from experience it feels pretty good on the teeth ;).

Some other features I love about Mama Gems:

  • The silicone beads are non-toxic and are free of BPA, latex, heavy metal, and lead.
  • The clasp will break apart if pulled hard enough – a safety feature.
  • It is super easy to care for, just needs a quick bath in hot soapy water and dries super quickly when you hang it afterwards.
  • The packaging is simple and functional and I love that it comes with little cards telling you which necklace it is and also with care instructions and safety reminders.
  • So many beautiful colours and designs that don’t scream “I’M A TEETHING NECKLACE”, so you can wear them with pretty much anything.
  • There are designs for kids too!

Aside from all of these great features I learned a little bit about something I knew nothing about previously: SMA, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy. There is no cure, no treatment, and it is a degenerative disease. 5% from each necklace is donated to the GSF, The Gwendolyn Strong Foundation which is non profit and raises awareness and money towards research to help end this disease – it is the #1 genetic killer of young children. You can learn more here.

If you are in the market for a teething necklace I would definitely recommend Mama Gems, not only will you end up with a beautiful, functional and safe product, you will be supporting an amazing Mom entrepreneur, Michaela and also contribute to ending an awful disease.

I will warn you, you will probably have trouble picking, I ended up with the Auni necklace as pictured, but it was a close decision between that Finnegan (in Mint)Indu, and Fleetwood. It’s the perfect gift for any Mama, or kidlet, or even just anyone who loves this type of look! You can head on over and check them out on their websiteInstagram, and also on Facebook.

I did not receive any compensation for this review, the opinions expressed are 100% my own and as always I will only feature brands I truly love! Thanks for tuning in!

Out take: Trying to get a shot of H Playing with the necklace, status: fail, he’s such a silly little goose.

Wow, I was totally unaware of these! Thanks Mama Gems for coming up with such a nice thing. Now, mommies won’t be afraid of what their babies are stuffing their mouth with. Great post!
